How to Turn Your Illustration Into a Nice Pin

How many times have we dreamed that our illustrations move to a third dimension? Today we bring you some tips for you to create your own pin and say goodbye to those evenings when your only use is to make your sofa cat …

If you imagined that to make your own pin, we were going to teach you how to use a laser cutter, I’m afraid that the shots did not go there. So don’t be scared because for this you don’t have to study any engineering.

We are simply going to talk about the steps to follow so that you are clear about the whole process behind creating a pin. If later you want to go to plan MagGiyver in your house, that is already up to you.

As good observers that we are, we like to pay attention to design visionaries, and if our great friend Naolito has thrown himself into the pool of the world of pins , (as if he were pulling a bridge), there we go behind he.

So take note of the steps you have to take to end up doing cool things like the ones our Nacho does, here we go!

1. Make a good sketch of your pin

A golden rule that applies to everything: The simpler, the more successful. We can not complicate life by making details in a design that will measure at most 50 × 50 mm. In addition, the grace of making a pin is that the fewer lines you have the better, so that it is clean and clear. So spend time on this phase, which is very important.

2. Consider the inks

Keep in mind that each color is a different enamel , so your design should be separated by a metal line, which will act as a barrier preventing colors from mixing. These lines should not be thinner than 0.2mm. Always use spot colors  and do not do shading or strange things.

Do not invent strange shapes, if your pin is very complicated, it is more than likely that it will be poorly trimmed. It is best to do it with rounded shapes, without too small gaps inside, since this additional cut would increase the manufacturing cost.

3. Final art

The last step in this phase is to send your vectorized design to the company that will manufacture it for you . Some tips: work in layers to differentiate the colors of the line  and please make two copies of the file !!

Expand the design you are going to use for the final art. In this way, it will retain exactly the characteristics that you have given it and as much as they are extended, the edges will not change in thickness.“Do several print tests.”

So only you will be the one to decide the size that best suits your pin (remember that in every design process, improvisation is the same as a mistake), that’s why, you better take it all tightly tied.

Well, ready, if you have been attentive to all the steps, you will have a very professional pin, all that remains is to finish the finishing details and, pin that raised you !!
